If you’re having reservations about Ben Affleck’s solo Batman film, Joe Manganiello is here to assure you that everything is going to be okay. This year alone, divisive opinions on both Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad have left many comic book fans disillusioned with DC Entertainment films. Things are looking up thanks to the new Wonder Woman trailer, but the skeptics remain. Manganiello, who is set to play Deathstroke, spoke up about his excitement for the film.

“When I met Ben we sat down and we talked about, you know, the role,” he said, according to Coming Soon. “We talked about the movie. His take is a fresh take but I think the audience is going to be surprised. Because it’s a road that no one’s really gone down that’s completely integral to, you know, who Batman is. And I think it’s gonna be refreshing, but at the same time completely familiar. But it’s going to take this franchise in a direction that I think A LOT of people are going to be really happy about. It’s going to be gritty and action packed and cerebral and all of those elements that people love about Batman.”

I nominate “gritty” as one of the most overused terms of this year. It’s clear that DC loves to dwell in a Christopher Nolan-esque dark world, but I just want them to execute a good film. With that said, I’m holding out hope for Wonder Woman and The Batman, because that trailer did its job in hyping up the former, and as for the latter, Ben Affleck has been known to make some good films of the non-romantic comedy variety.

“Ben’s a great director, man,” Manganiello added. “I mean the last movie that man directed won best picture. He’s got an Oscar for writing. Like, this is all the components to go down as a–everything is lined up for a really really really great movie. Not only a superhero movie, but just a great, great movie.”

So far, we know that Batfleck will have a new suit and that he will be full of “frustration, bitterness, and anger.” Affleck is co-writing the script with Geoff Johns, the Chief Creative Office at DC Comics who also penned the Wonder Woman script, as well as 69 episodes of CW’s The Flash. Not to get ahead of myself, but I think this film is in good hands.
